Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Mariere, has urged teachers in public primary schools across the state to take full advantage of training programmes aimed at improving their professional competence and service delivery.
Hon. Mariere made the call on Monday in Asaba while declaring open a five-day training workshop organised by the British Council for over 200 selected primary school teachers drawn from the 25 local government areas of Delta State.
Addressing participants, the SUBEB Chairman said the teachers were privileged to be selected for the capacity-building programme that being organised and funded by a reputable international body.
“You are fortunate to be part of this training organized by the British Council. This exercise underscores the importance of continuous training, which will sharpen your teaching skills, expand your knowledge base and positively impact learning outcomes in your respective schools,” Mariere said.
The former lawmaker reiterated the commitment of the Delta State Government to quality education, stating that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration has continued to prioritize education through realistic reforms embedded in the MORE Agenda.
“The state government under the leadership of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, places premium value on quality education. I urge you to reciprocate these efforts by giving your best to the teaching profession,” he added.
Hon. Mariere assured that SUBEB would continue to introduce reforms in the public primary school system, including effective clock-in mechanisms, equitable distribution and transfer of teachers, and regular training programmes, all aimed at enhancing proficiency and effective service delivery.
He commended the management of the British Council for choosing Delta State as a beneficiary of the programme and assured them of SUBEB’s readiness for a sustained and robust partnership.
“We appreciate the British Council for this intervention and look forward to more engagements that will further strengthen primary education in Delta State,” Mariere stated.
Earlier, the British Council Project Manager, Dr. Bliss Albert Ameh, welcomed participants to the training programme entitled “Strengthening Teachers’ English Proficiency, STEP”, explaining that its core objective was to improve teachers’ pedagogical understanding and skills.
“The essence of this programme is to strengthen your English proficiency and enhance your teaching methods for better learning outcomes,” Dr. Ameh stated.
He outlined key expectations from the training, noting that participants would be exposed to modern teaching approaches and effective classroom practices.
“Seasoned resource persons will train you on the language of instruction, lesson planning, time management and other essential teaching skills. We are optimistic that this programme will yield positive results across the board,” he added.
The event was attended by the State Coordinator of the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC), Mrs. Sharon Dafilue; Director, Teacher Development, Mr. Eru Ezefili; Lead Facilitator, Dr. Maureen Ororho; as well as officials of the British Council led by the Project Manager, Dr. Bliss Albert Ameh.
