Last week, I came across a disturbing video circulating online in which a family raised an alarm over the activities of an illegal sand miner whose excavation operations are now threatening the structural integrity of their building.
In line with the proactive governance style of His Excellency, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori , Governor of Delta State, I immediately led a team comprising staff of the Ministry of Environment and security operatives to the site of the illegal mining operation.
Upon arrival, we successfully apprehended some of the individuals involved and impounded a payloader machine being used at the site. All suspects and equipment were promptly handed over to the Nigeria Police at Owa-Oyibu Division for further investigation.
It is important to note that this is not the first time action has been taken against this illegal activity. A few months ago, following a petition from concerned citizens, I visited this same location. At the time, a stop-work order was issued to the miner, along with a directive to carry out remedial measures to prevent further degradation, especially considering that the Owanta community is highly susceptible to gully erosion.
Unfortunately, the miner ignored these directives and continued operations illegally.
Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, environmental sustainability remains a top priority for this administration.
We will not tolerate any individual or group undermining the Governor’s efforts to protect and restore our environment.
The police have commenced their investigation, and the arrested individuals will be charged to a competent court of law. This will serve as a strong deterrent to others engaging in similar unlawful activities.
Let this serve as a clear warning: the Delta State Government will continue to act decisively to protect our environment and safeguard the wellbeing of our communities.
Jamani Tommy Ejiro
Honourable Commissioner for Environment
