The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State, Muhammad Gadaka, has sparked controversy after urging women to consider divorcing husbands who prevent them from voting for the party.

Gadaka reportedly made the controversial remark while addressing women supporters of the APC, encouraging them to exercise their constitutional right to vote according to their political preference.

According to him, women should not allow their husbands to dictate their choice at the ballot box, stressing that voting is an individual civic responsibility.

His comment, however, has drawn criticism, with many describing the call for divorce as inappropriate and unnecessarily provocative, particularly coming from a senior political figure.

The statement has since generated debate on social media and among political observers, with reactions ranging from condemnation to support for women’s right to make independent political choices.

The Yobe APC chairman’s remarks come amid growing political mobilisation ahead of the next electoral cycle, as political parties intensify efforts to win the support of women and other key voting blocs.

While the controversy continues, the incident has renewed discussions about political freedom within households, women’s autonomy in elections and the extent to which political leaders should influence personal and family relationships.
