Dolly Parton, the legendary American singer, songwriter, actress, philanthropist and businesswoman, has died at the age of 80.
Parton, widely celebrated as the “Queen of Country Music,” died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, bringing to a close a remarkable career that spanned nearly six decades. Her family confirmed her death, with tributes already pouring in for one of the most beloved and influential figures in American music.
Born Dolly Rebecca Parton on January 19, 1946, in Tennessee, Parton rose from humble beginnings to become an international superstar. She began her recording career with the 1967 album Hello, I’m Dolly and went on to establish herself not only as a performer but also as one of the most prolific songwriters of her generation.
Her extraordinary catalogue included timeless songs such as “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You,” “9 to 5” and “Coat of Many Colors.” She wrote thousands of songs and sold more than 100 million records worldwide, earning her a place among the most successful artists in music history.
Parton’s talents extended far beyond country music. She enjoyed a successful acting career, appearing in films including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, while her business ventures included the creation of Dollywood, the celebrated theme park in her native Tennessee.
Yet, for many admirers, Parton’s greatest legacy went beyond entertainment. Through her philanthropy, particularly the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library literacy programme, she helped put books into the hands of millions of children. She also supported major charitable and humanitarian causes throughout her life.
Her achievements earned her numerous honours, including multiple Grammy Awards and recognition from some of the world’s most prestigious entertainment institutions. But beyond the awards and accolades, Parton was admired for her warmth, humour, resilience and generosity.
Her death comes after the passing of her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, in March 2025. The couple had been married for nearly 60 years.
