Earlier at Plenary, the House considered and adopted an extension of the Business Calendar for the first quarter of the third session of the 8th Assembly.
Hon. Ibhamawu explained that while the Nigerian Constitution mandates the National Assembly to sit for 181 days annually, the Edo Assembly had initially scheduled fewer sittings. To comply with constitutional requirements, the calendar was extended by 13 sitting days,
shifting the end date to 17th September 2025.
The House also debated a bill seeking to provide for the protection of government property and the establishment of the Edo State Property Protection Committee.
Introducing the bill, Hon. Ibhamawu decried the illegal sale and misuse of public assets, citing a case in Esan West where land belonging to a government hospital was sold to private individuals.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku supported the bill, narrating how a public school in his constituency had been converted into a private church. He stressed the need to safeguard government facilities from encroachment and misuse. The bill was unanimously supported and referred to the Committee on Security for further legislative work, with a two-week deadline for report submission.
Also at Wednesday’s plenary, Hon. Ibhamawu presented a bill to amend the law on the order of precedence and protocol during official functions. He noted that disorder often arises when seats reserved for lawmakers at public events are taken by unauthorized persons.
Supporting the bill, Hon. Dr. Richard Edosa (Oredo West) emphasized that adherence to protocol is vital for order, respect for hierarchy, and smooth conduct of official engagements.
