Edo State Government has reiterated its total ban on cultism and cult-related activities across the state, warning politicians, groups and individuals against using the ongoing primary election season as a cover for violence, intimidation and other criminal acts.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the government stressed that it would not tolerate any attempt to undermine the democratic process through cult-related violence or political thuggery.
The statement noted that growing concerns over possible politically motivated cult activities during the primaries had prompted the renewed warning, adding that no political interest or individual would be allowed to use elections as a shield for lawlessness.
According to the government, the ban on cultism in Edo State remains “total, absolute and non-negotiable,” warning that anyone found engaging in cult activities or sponsoring electoral violence would face the full weight of the law, regardless of status or political affiliation.
The administration of Monday Okpebholo further stated that security of lives, property and democratic institutions remains a top priority under its SHINE Agenda, which places security at the centre of governance.
The government disclosed that security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, have been placed on high alert and directed to respond swiftly to any report of cultism, electoral intimidation or violence across the state’s three senatorial districts.
It also warned that any attempt to weaponise cult groups against political opponents, communities or innocent citizens during the primary election period would be treated as a criminal offence and prosecuted accordingly.
Residents were encouraged to report suspicious activities and threats to security agencies or through official emergency channels, with assurances that whistle-blowers and informants would be protected.
The government further called on political parties, candidates, delegates, traditional rulers, youth groups and other stakeholders to promote peaceful participation and reject cultism and electoral violence in all forms.
The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that Edo State remains peaceful while guaranteeing free, fair and safe elections for all citizens.
