BENIN CITY — The Edo State Security Squad has directed business owners across the state to install functional Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at their premises on or before July 30, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen security and improve crime investigation.
The spokesperson for the Edo State Security Squad, Noah Idemudia, announced the directive while addressing journalists in Benin City on Monday, stressing that CCTV footage would play a crucial role in helping security agencies investigate criminal activities, identify suspects and gather evidence for prosecution.
“Business owners are encouraged to install effective, working cameras within their business premises. We appeal to the general public and the business community to comply for everyone’s safety,” Idemudia said.
“With your cameras, we can piece together certain things as professionals. Please comply with us to make Edo a safe place,” he added.
The security spokesperson also issued a stern warning to individuals and groups allegedly planning to mark the annual “7/7” cult-related celebrations, declaring that security operatives were fully prepared to arrest and prosecute anyone involved.
“We are already taking action. You cannot carry out such acts in Benin City. Even if you go outside Benin, you will still be apprehended. So there is no point,” he said.
“If you already have the intention of celebrating, please cancel it now, because when you are arrested, you will be prosecuted accordingly.”
Idemudia further reiterated the importance of identifying and profiling recognised community leaders across Edo State in collaboration with the Oba of Benin Palace, warning that individuals falsely presenting themselves as community leaders would face legal consequences.
He also disclosed that operatives of the Edo State Security Squad recently arrested two suspects in Auchi and Uromi over alleged cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.
According to him, the suspects will be arraigned before the mobile court established by the Edo State Government to ensure speedy prosecution of suspected cultists and kidnappers.
