The Energy and Maritime Reporters of Nigeria (EMR), Rivers State Council, has concluded arrangements to commemorate the 2026 World Ocean Day on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Council, Mr. Martins Giadom, and the Secretary, Mr. Ilanye Jumbo, the event is scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m.

The celebration will be held under the global theme, “Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship with Our Ocean.”

According to the statement, the Council is committed to promoting the protection and sustainability of oceans and waterways, which support fishing communities, facilitate maritime trade, and play a vital role in climate regulation.

The EMR expressed concern over the growing threat posed by non-biodegradable waste, particularly plastics, as well as oil spills that continue to endanger livelihoods and the environment in coastal communities across the Niger Delta.

As part of the event, a goodwill message will be delivered by Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, Nigeria (YEAC-N).

The event is expected to bring together journalists, environmental advocates, maritime stakeholders, and members of the public to discuss strategies for fostering a healthier and more sustainable relationship with the ocean.
