Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, were reportedly attacked in what has been described as a suspected assassination attempt in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday.
The incident allegedly occurred at Odigie-Oyegun’s residence shortly after a political engagement in the state capital.
A video circulating online shows the aftermath of the attack, with several vehicles visibly damaged and the estate gate riddled with bullet holes.
Speaking in the footage, Obi stated that the attack took place shortly after the group departed from the headquarters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state.
Also reacting to the development, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, alleged that armed individuals trailed the group from the ADC Secretariat to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence.
According to Tanko, the assailants opened fire at the entrance gate and shot at several official vehicles parked within the premises.
“The leadership of the ADC is under siege and attack in Benin, Edo State. Armed individuals followed us from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and shot at the gate, destroying several vehicles,” he said.
Tanko described the incident as a failed assassination attempt allegedly targeting members of the party’s leadership. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
