First Lady Melania Trump made a high-profile return to the public spotlight at a White House Rose Garden event, where she unveiled a major expansion of her Fostering the Future initiative and drew laughter with a light-hearted opening remark.
Addressing guests at the event, Melania Trump began with the playful line, “I heard you missed me. Here I am,” prompting laughter from the audience, including President Donald Trump.
The first lady, dressed in red, white and blue, used the occasion to announce a new $2 million scholarship partnership between Fox Corporation and IndyCar aimed at supporting young Americans transitioning out of the foster care system.
The initiative is designed to provide educational opportunities and financial support to young people who often face significant challenges when moving from foster care into independent adulthood.
The latest commitment will expand the reach of Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future initiative by adding Indiana University and Purdue University to its network of participating institutions.
With the addition of the two universities, the programme now covers 26 colleges and universities across the United States, further broadening access to higher education for young people who have experienced foster care.
The announcement was made against a distinctly patriotic backdrop, with the first lady wearing the national colours while an IndyCar vehicle was displayed nearby.
Melania Trump has increasingly used her Fostering the Future initiative to focus attention on education, technology, mentorship and opportunities for young people transitioning out of foster care.
The latest partnership, she said, represents another step towards helping vulnerable young Americans gain the education and support needed to build independent and successful futures.
