Journalists covering the ongoing Osun State governorship election were reportedly attacked by hoodlums who stormed the polling unit of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Dr. Najeem Salaam, in Ejigbo Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred at Polling Unit 4, Ward 4, where voting was reportedly disrupted after the hoodlums arrived at the polling centre.
Amid the ensuing tension, the ADC candidate was said to have been whisked away from the scene by supporters and others in an apparent effort to prevent the situation from escalating.
However, journalists who arrived at the polling unit to cover the development were allegedly attacked by the hoodlums.
Vehicles belonging to some of the journalists reportedly had their windscreens and side windows smashed, while some reporters were said to have narrowly escaped physical assault as the attackers allegedly went on a rampage.
The tense situation subsequently forced electoral officials to suspend voting at the polling unit.
The incident created panic among voters and other persons at the polling centre, with activities disrupted as security concerns heightened.
As of the time of filing this report, the identities of those behind the attack and the extent of any injuries had not been immediately ascertained.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of journalists, voters and electoral officials during the ongoing governorship election.
