The National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has reportedly zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South for a single term, a move already generating intense reactions from politicians, party loyalists and political observers across the country.

Supporters of the decision described it as a “fair and strategic” move capable of promoting inclusiveness and strengthening national unity ahead of the next general election. Some political commentators argued that the development reflects early signs of internal balance and long-term planning within the party.

Several reactions focused on the possible political implications for key opposition figures, especially former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi and NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to some analysts, Atiku should have championed a similar arrangement within the opposition coalition and supported Obi for a single term to improve his own chances in 2031. Others suggested that a Peter Obi–Kwankwaso alliance could significantly strengthen opposition support across both Northern and Southern regions.

However, not everyone is convinced the arrangement will hold. Critics questioned whether political actors would truly respect the reported agreement, citing past political precedents where zoning arrangements allegedly collapsed due to personal ambition.

Some observers also interpreted the move as a calculated political strategy designed to reshape regional voting patterns ahead of the 2027 election, while others maintained that inclusiveness and power rotation remain necessary for national stability and fairness.

The development has continued to trigger debate online, with many Nigerians divided over whether the zoning formula will strengthen opposition unity or deepen existing political rivalries ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
