The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially welcomed its new Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, following a formal handover ceremony at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

In her address, Acting Chairman Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu described the transition as a “significant moment in our nation’s democratic journey,” noting that Amupitan’s appointment comes as INEC finalizes preparations for the Anambra Governorship Election slated for November 8, 2025.

She assured him of a strong institutional foundation and commended INEC staff as “some of the finest and most patriotic public servants in Nigeria.”

In his inaugural speech, Professor Amupitan thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment and pledged to uphold “integrity, transparency, and discipline” in steering the Commission.

Describing the Anambra poll as “a pivotal test of our commitment to credible elections,” he called on staff to “break down silos, foster open communication, and build synergy” across all departments.

He also made staff welfare a key priority, stating: “We are going to expect much from you, so we must also meet your expectations with fairness and honesty.”

The ceremony was attended by top INEC directors, representatives from the University of Jos (Amupitan’s alma mater), and members of his family.

Amupitan closed on a unifying note: “Together, let us strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and restore national confidence in our elections.”
