As the Super Eagles prepare to take on host nation Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 semi-final on Wednesday night, the Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its unwavering backing for the team, urging players to carry the hopes of the nation with pride.
In a statement shared on social media, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, told the squad that “the whole of Nigeria stands firmly with you” as they prepare for a high-stakes encounter in Rabat. He praised the team for inspiring performances through the tournament and reminded them of the rich history of Nigerian football at the continental level.
The Super Eagles have been in impressive form at AFCON 2025, winning all five of their matches so far — including a convincing 2–0 quarter-final victory over Algeria that booked their place in the semi-final.
Wednesday’s clash marks the sixth AFCON meeting between Nigeria and Morocco and just the second time the sides have faced off in a semi-final at this level.
The most memorable previous semi-final between the two came in 1980, when Nigeria edged Morocco 1–0 en route to lifting their first continental title.
In 2000, the Super Eagles secured a 2–0 group-stage win over Morocco courtesy of goals from Finidi George and Julius Aghahowa.

Earlier encounters have swung both ways: Morocco recorded victories in 1976 and in the 2004 group stage.
Overall, the rivalry at AFCON has been competitive, with each previous match producing a winner and no draws in tournament play.
What’s at Stake
A win on Wednesday would not only send Nigeria into their second consecutive AFCON final — a feat not achieved since the late 1980s — but also keep alive their quest for a fourth continental crown.
As anticipation builds and Nigerians across the globe rally behind the team, government officials, fans, and private sponsors continue to express their confidence in the Eagles’ ability to deliver on the big stage.
All is now set at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Warri Correspondents’ Chapel Press Centre where journalists are expected to watch the semi final match between the Nigerian Super Eagles and the Lions of Morocco in the on going 2025 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Morocco.
As usual, expectations are high with strong prayers for the good Lord to grant the team good success and victory.
According to the former NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu as posted on his Facebook page, “I pray for a victorious outing for the Super Eagles. We are showing it live here at High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemopolo Press Centre, Warri”.
