An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, is currently in police custody as authorities investigate the death of a female corps member in Abeokuta.
The deceased, identified as Victoria Ariyo, was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area before her death on Tuesday. According to sources, she reportedly died from complications related to a pregnancy.
Mr. Olalekan serves as the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South. Multiple sources familiar with the situation said he has been taken into custody at the state police headquarters in Eleweran to assist with ongoing investigations.
Sources also indicated that the late Ariyo may have undergone a pregnancy termination prior to developing complications. However, these claims have not been officially confirmed by authorities.
She has since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Her death comes weeks after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who was also serving in Abeokuta South LGA, passed away under circumstances that remain unclear. Mary was posted to Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her Place of Primary Assignment, and both corps members were said to have been acquaintances.
Some NYSC sources have alleged a possible personal relationship between Mr. Olalekan and the deceased, though this has not been independently verified.
Confirming developments in the case, a police source stated that the NYSC official is in custody. However, the Ogun State Police Command has not provided detailed comments on the detention.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the matter is under investigation.
“I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” he said.
Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
