Former Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has faulted claims by his successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, that his administration left behind a ₦600 billion debt burden.
Obaseki, in a statement issued yesterday, dismissed the allegation as false and misleading, describing it as an attempt to discredit the achievements of his government.
He maintained that his administration managed the state’s finances prudently, adding that the figures being circulated by the new government were “grossly inflated and politically motivated.”
The former governor urged Okpebholo to focus on governance and delivering on his promises to the people of Edo State rather than engaging in what he termed a “campaign of misinformation.”
The debt controversy comes amid rising political tension in Edo following the recent transition of power, with both camps trading accusations over the state’s financial health.
