An Ohio pastor, Israel Ford of LifeWorks Church in the Cleveland area, has defended his unconventional marriage after a viral church video showed him and his first wife, Lydia, publicly introducing Minister Shakayla as his second wife.
Ford addressed the controversy alongside both women during an appearance on Larry Reid Live, where they explained how their relationship developed and why they decided to make it public.
According to reports by Complex and TheGrio, the trio said their polygynous relationship had existed for nearly three years before the announcement at a Sunday service sparked widespread debate on social media.
During the service, Lydia introduced Shakayla to the congregation as her “sister in marriage,” explaining that her husband had another wife. Shakayla subsequently addressed the congregation, describing the arrangement as God’s will and saying she had not felt slighted by the relationship.
Ford also challenged conventional Christian interpretations of marriage, arguing that the teaching that a man should have only one wife was not necessarily supported by his understanding of Scripture.
How the Relationship Began
In their interview, the couple explained that the relationship developed after Shakayla became close to the family. According to TheGrio, Ford said he developed romantic feelings for her but insisted that he would not proceed without Lydia’s acceptance.
Lydia acknowledged that she initially resisted the idea but later reconsidered after prayer, fasting and studying Scripture.
The three presented their relationship as a family arrangement grounded in their religious convictions, although their views have attracted criticism from people who disagree with their interpretation of biblical marriage.
Shakayla also clarified that she did not intend to displace Lydia’s position within the church or compete with her for leadership.
Viral Announcement Sparks Debate
The announcement quickly circulated online, prompting discussions about Christian marriage, religious interpretation, monogamy and the responsibilities expected of church leaders.
Some critics questioned whether Ford’s arrangement was consistent with biblical teachings that call for church overseers to be faithful to one wife. Others debated whether the relationship should be viewed primarily as a private family arrangement or a religious matter.
The controversy has also drawn attention to the distinction between a religiously described union and a legally recognised marriage.
What Ohio Law Says About Bigamy
Ohio law prohibits a married person from marrying another person or continuing to cohabit with that person in the state, subject to a statutory defence in specified circumstances.
Section 2919.01 of the Ohio Revised Code classifies bigamy as a first-degree misdemeanor. The law is available on the official “Ohio Laws website” (https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-2919.01).
However, the public announcement alone does not establish whether a second civil marriage was registered or whether the specific circumstances meet the legal requirements for an offence. The couple’s description of their relationship as a marriage does not, by itself, establish its legal status.
As the debate continues, Ford and his wives maintain that their relationship reflects their faith and personal convictions, while critics continue to question its religious and legal implications.
