A heavy rainstorm accompanied by strong winds caused widespread destruction across Asaba, the Delta State capital, on Friday leaving damaged properties, fallen billboards, and disrupted power infrastructure in its wake.
Reports from the city indicate that one of the major incidents involved a large billboard that collapsed onto a car showroom, destroying several vehicles on display, including Mercedes-Benz cars and other high-value automobiles.
Eyewitnesses said the storm’s intensity brought down several other billboards across different parts of the city. While some fell onto major roads, obstructing traffic, others crashed into residential and commercial properties, causing varying degrees of damage.
The powerful winds that accompanied the rainfall also reportedly uprooted and knocked down several electricity poles, raising concerns over power outages and public safety in affected areas.
In addition to the structural damage, residents lamented the worsening erosion situation along the Okpanam Road axis, where heavy flooding further deteriorated sections of the roadway.
Residents have called on the Delta State Government and relevant emergency agencies to urgently intervene and provide relief measures to address the hardship caused by the flooding and storm damage.
As of the time of filing this report, no casualties had been officially confirmed, while assessments of the extent of the damage were still ongoing.
