Former Minister of Interior and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing worsening insecurity and deepening economic hardship across the country.
Aregbesola made the remarks while addressing delegates at the ADC National Convention in Abuja, where he strongly criticised the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, describing it as deceptive and ineffective.
In his speech, the former Osun State governor accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of mismanaging the country and undermining democratic principles. He also took a swipe at what he described as attempts to label divisive political actions as strategic, insisting that such actions amount to criminality rather than legitimate politics.
He maintained that the ADC is driven by the aspirations of Nigerians seeking change, stressing that the party’s foundation lies in constitutional rights, particularly the freedom of association. According to him, the party is committed to rescuing the country from what he termed the “stranglehold” of the ruling party.
Aregbesola further alleged that the current administration has presided over policies that have worsened the nation’s economic outlook. He argued that despite government claims of improvement, the naira has significantly depreciated against the dollar since 2023, with serious consequences for an import-dependent economy.
He also highlighted the sharp increase in fuel prices, noting that the cost per litre has surged dramatically, contributing to rising transportation expenses. According to him, the situation has made it increasingly difficult for many Nigerians, with some workers now struggling to afford daily commutes.
The ADC chieftain concluded by urging Nigerians to support efforts aimed at restoring effective governance and alleviating the country’s economic and security challenges.
