Security agencies in Edo State have been placed on high alert following intelligence reports indicating a planned mass abduction of schoolchildren by suspected bandits operating within the state.

According to information obtained, the suspected kidnappers are allegedly targeting schools, particularly in Edo North Senatorial District, after previous attempts to abduct wealthy individuals reportedly failed to yield substantial financial returns.

Intelligence sources revealed that the plot was uncovered through an intercepted conversation between two suspected bandits identified as Bawa and Nuhu. During the exchange, the suspects allegedly discussed plans to shift their focus to schoolchildren, believing that such abductions would attract greater government attention and increase the likelihood of receiving large ransom payments and concessions.

In a related development, security operatives on June 4, 2026, apprehended a 25-year-old suspect, Emmanuel Momidu, who was reportedly observed conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School in Makeke Community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

Following the intelligence report, the NSCDC and State Security Services (SSS), have advised the immediate implementation of enhanced security measures around schools and educational institutions across the state, with particular emphasis on vulnerable communities in Edo North.

Recommended measures include the deployment of security personnel to vulnerable schools, intensified patrols in identified risk areas, and strengthened collaboration among security agencies, local vigilante groups, hunters, and community stakeholders.

Authorities have urged school administrators, parents, and community leaders to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies as efforts continue to prevent any potential attack on educational institutions in the state.
