President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in London for a historic two-day state visit to the United Kingdom, marking the first such visit by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades.

The Nigerian leader’s visit follows an official invitation from Charles III, who will host Tinubu and Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, at Windsor Castle during the two-day diplomatic engagement.

The visit, scheduled for March 18–19, is considered a major milestone in diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, as it is the first state visit by a Nigerian president to Britain in 37 years. The last such visit occurred in 1989 during the administration of former military president Ibrahim Babangida.

During the visit, Tinubu is expected to participate in a series of high-level engagements and ceremonial events typically associated with state visits. These include an official reception, a ceremonial welcome and a state banquet hosted by the British monarch. The programme is also expected to include meetings with key UK government officials aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between both countries.

The state visit comes against the backdrop of growing diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, particularly following the strategic partnership agreement signed by both nations in 2024 to deepen collaboration in trade, investment, migration, and security.

Officials say the visit will provide an opportunity for both countries to expand cooperation in critical sectors including energy, infrastructure development, education, and technology while also strengthening historical ties between the two Commonwealth partners.

Historically, only a few Nigerian leaders have undertaken state visits to the United Kingdom. These include former Head of State Yakubu Gowon in 1973 and former President Shehu Shagari in 1981.

Analysts say the latest visit reflects Nigeria’s renewed diplomatic engagement with global partners and underscores the importance of the Nigeria–UK relationship in advancing economic cooperation and international diplomacy.

Tinubu, who assumed office as Nigeria’s president in May 2023, has in recent months embarked on several foreign engagements aimed at attracting investment and strengthening Nigeria’s international partnerships.

The outcome of the visit is expected to further consolidate bilateral ties and open new opportunities for economic collaboration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
