Tinubu Hails Wike’s Transformation of Abuja at 50, Says FCT Is Changing for the Better

President Bola Tinubu has praised the transformation of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), saying Abuja is witnessing remarkable progress under the leadership of Minister Nyesom Wike, 50 years after the nation’s capital was created.

The president made the remarks on Friday night in Abuja during a special thanksgiving dinner held to celebrate the successful inauguration of 31 projects completed across the FCT within 28 days.

Represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu commended Wike and his team for their commitment and sacrifices in delivering projects that have improved the nation’s capital.

“Tonight is a night dedicated to giving thanks to God Almighty. I thank God for our lives, for the survival of our country over the years, and for the residents and indigenous people of the Federal Capital Territory.

“Fifty years after the creation of the FCT, things have changed. Things have turned around, and they are getting better,” the president said.

Tinubu also lauded Wike’s leadership style, noting that true leadership is reflected in visible achievements rather than promises.

“Leadership is not measured by how loudly one announces plans, but by how clearly the people can see the results of those plans,” he said.

Describing the FCT as a symbol of Nigeria’s unity, Tinubu said Abuja belongs to every Nigerian, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

“The FCT is where unity resides, where diversity meets, and where the hope of every citizen finds a common address.

“Every new road shortens someone’s journey. Every new bridge connects more than communities; it strengthens friendship, promotes unity, and creates opportunities for Nigerians. Every completed project reassures citizens that government can deliver when vision is matched with determination,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, former FCT Minister and Special Adviser to the President on General Duties in the Office of the Vice President, Aliyu Modibbo, described Wike as one of the most impactful ministers to have overseen the territory.

Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima, Modibbo expressed confidence that Wike would continue as FCT minister if Tinubu secures a second term in office.

“Four years is not enough to complete what you have started,” he said.

In his remarks, Wike recalled that when he assumed office as FCT minister in August 2023, he inherited a civil service that was demoralised and lacked the motivation needed to implement the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said he and the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, had since revitalised the system, highlighting the establishment of the FCT Civil Service Commission as one of the key reforms aimed at strengthening governance and improving service delivery.
