President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured former Head of State Murtala Ramat Muhammed, describing him as a principled military leader with strong democratic ideals whose brief but impactful tenure reshaped Nigeria’s political trajectory and strengthened Africa’s liberation movements.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, President Tinubu praised Muhammed’s firm anti-corruption stance and his decisive commitment to returning Nigeria to civilian rule. He noted that despite his short time in office, Muhammed laid critical foundations for political transition and institutional reforms that influenced the country’s democratic evolution.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also reflected on Muhammed’s leadership style, highlighting his deliberate effort to groom capable successors. Obasanjo remarked that such foresight and willingness to build strong institutions beyond personal rule remain rare qualities among leaders.

In his remarks, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said Muhammed’s vision of a self-reliant and economically empowered Africa is increasingly taking shape. He pointed to continental initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area as evidence of progress toward deeper economic integration and shared prosperity.

Former Malawian President Joyce Banda paid tribute to Muhammed as a selfless Pan-Africanist committed to public service and continental solidarity. She emphasized his unwavering support for African liberation struggles and his contributions to political and economic emancipation across the continent.

Collectively, speakers at the event underscored Murtala Muhammed’s enduring legacy — not only as a reform-driven Nigerian leader but also as a symbol of principled, visionary leadership in Africa’s quest for unity, justice, and development.
