President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sympathy with world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following a fatal road accident in which the boxer was involved on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The accident, which occurred on the busy highway, reportedly claimed the lives of two people, while Joshua sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
In a statement reacting to the incident, President Tinubu described the development as a tragic loss, extending his condolences to Joshua and the families of the deceased.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” the President said.
Tinubu noted that the incident had cast a sombre mood over the season, acknowledging the emotional toll it has taken on the boxer and his family.
“This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season. I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident,” he added.
The President also commended Joshua for his achievements in sports and his consistent representation of Nigeria on the global stage.
“As a sportsman, you have always demonstrated courage, discipline and unwavering love for our country. These qualities have made you a source of national pride,” Tinubu stated.
Calling for unity and support in moments of grief, the President prayed for Joshua’s recovery and comfort for the bereaved families.
“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny. I pray for strength, wisdom and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government confirmed that two male foreign nationals died at the scene of the accident, while Joshua survived and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
According to a statement from the state government, the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Livewell Mortuary in Sagamu.
