President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to urgently restore peace and strengthen security across Nigeria, assuring him of full presidential backing.
Speaking on Wednesday during the decoration ceremony of Disu at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu said the appointment comes at a critical time for the country’s security architecture. Disu’s appointment follows the retirement of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun and is subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate.
According to the President, Disu’s track record, particularly during his service in Lagos while Tinubu was governor, influenced his decision.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” Tinubu said.
The President urged the Acting IGP to rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and deepen collaboration with other security agencies to tackle the country’s pressing security challenges, including banditry and terrorism.
“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” he stated.

Tinubu also tasked Disu with advancing the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in his discipline, operational experience, and leadership capacity.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President added, reaffirming his belief that the country would prevail under committed leadership.
The President paid tribute to the outgoing IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, thanking him for his service to the nation and maintaining law and order. He encouraged Egbetokun to support his successor with counsel when needed.
“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” Tinubu said, wishing him and his family peace, good health, and success in future endeavours.
Among dignitaries present at the event were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; and retired AIG Hakeem Odumosu, alongside senior government officials and members of the Acting IGP’s family.
