A final-year student of Covenant University, identified as Jesutunmise Emmanuel, has died following a medical emergency that occurred during a football training session on April 6, 2026.

According to reports, Emmanuel, a 500-level Building Technology student, complained of leg pain and fatigue while playing and stepped out of the game to rest. Moments later, he was said to have developed breathing difficulties, prompting concern among fellow students.

He was immediately rushed to the university’s medical centre, where he was later pronounced dead.

In a statement released by the institution’s management, the university confirmed the sequence of events, noting that the student showed signs of distress shortly after leaving the field.

However, the incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with some users alleging medical negligence. Claims circulating online suggest that the university’s medical facility lacked adequate oxygen supply during the emergency, while others accused officials of resorting to prayer instead of providing urgent medical care.

As of now, the university has not publicly addressed these specific allegations. The incident continues to generate debate, with calls from the public for greater transparency and improved emergency response systems within tertiary institutions.
