A staff member of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has died after he was electrocuted while repairing an electrical fault in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The tragic incident occurred over the weekend opposite the Federal Polytechnic Satellite Campus, where the technician and his colleagues were working to restore electricity supply to residents following a power outage.
Eyewitnesses said the BEDC worker was on top of an electricity pole when he suddenly became weak and appeared disoriented, raising concerns among his colleagues.
His fellow workers immediately moved to assist him before operatives of the Ekiti State Fire and Emergency Service arrived at the scene and helped bring him down from the pole.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention but was later confirmed dead while receiving treatment, according to hospital sources.
The incident has revived memories of a similar tragedy in the same area in 2012, when a staff member of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), identified as Samuel Isaac, was electrocuted while carrying out official duties.
As of the time of filing this report, BEDC had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
