US President Donald Trump has announced a new name for artificial intelligence, declaring that the technology will henceforth be referred to as “Super Intelligence.”
Trump made the announcement on Tuesday during his opening remarks at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he also rejected efforts to establish a global framework for regulating artificial intelligence.
According to Trump, the term “artificial intelligence” does not accurately reflect the capabilities of the technology because the word “artificial” makes it sound fake.
“The use of the word artificial makes intelligence fake. It makes it sound fake, and it is not fake. It’s actually amazing, but we have to be careful,” Trump said.
He said the US government would begin replacing “Artificial Intelligence” with “Super Intelligence” in official documents, while expressing hope that other countries would adopt the new terminology.
“In fact, it is exactly the opposite of what it purports. From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world’s, will be changed to use the much more accurate term: Super, as opposed to artificial. So, it’s Super Intelligence,” he said.
Trump described the move as the beginning of a “new world of Super Intelligence,” abbreviated as “SI.”
“Let’s see if that goes. It sounds much better, it is much better, and it’s much more accurate. Let’s see if I have any power. Maybe I do, and maybe I don’t. We’re going to find out pretty soon,” he added.
The announcement came days after Trump asked his social media followers to choose a new name for artificial intelligence. Among the alternatives he proposed were “Superior Intelligence,” “Extreme Intelligence” and “Supreme Intelligence.”
Trump had argued that “Artificial Intelligence” was an inaccurate and “very ineloquent” description, urging his followers to select what he considered a more fitting and elegant term for the technology.
His latest announcement at the UN marks a notable push to popularise “Super Intelligence” as an alternative description for AI.
