President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has celebrated legendary Nigerian musician, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
In a congratulatory message issued on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, President Tinubu described the music icon as an exemplar of “musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship,” praising his decades-long contribution to Nigeria’s creative industry.
The President said King Sunny Ade had, through his extraordinary talent, creativity, discipline and passion, transformed juju music into a globally recognised Nigerian cultural treasure.
According to Tinubu, the veteran musician’s distinctive sound, masterful use of the guitar, talking drums and other traditional instruments, as well as his innovative approach to music and performance, had earned him a distinguished place in the history of African arts and entertainment.
“Beyond your musical accomplishments, you have remained a proud ambassador of Nigeria, demonstrating through your career that our cultural heritage can transcend borders and speak powerfully to people everywhere,” the President said.
Tinubu also acknowledged King Sunny Ade’s influence on generations of musicians and practitioners in Nigeria’s creative sector, noting that his music had gone beyond entertainment to preserve cultural identity, celebrate Nigerian traditions and showcase the country’s diversity to audiences around the world.
“As President, I deeply recognise and celebrate the immense contributions of our cultural icons. On this important milestone, I am especially grateful to God for the grace He has given you,” Tinubu stated.
The President further described the 80-year-old musician as an embodiment of excellence, perseverance and service to the arts, adding that his achievements demonstrate how talent, dedication and commitment to cultural heritage can create an enduring national legacy.
Tinubu, on behalf of his family, the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria, congratulated King Sunny Ade and prayed for his continued good health, wisdom and many more fulfilling years.
King Sunny Ade, one of Nigeria’s most internationally recognised musicians, has enjoyed a career spanning several decades and played a major role in taking juju music to audiences beyond Nigeria and Africa.
