BENIN CITY — The Edo State Police Command has ordered a discreet investigation into a viral video showing an altercation between officers of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) and personnel of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
The video, which has been circulating on social media, also shows an IRT officer allegedly firing his rifle into the air during the incident.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 10, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Daaor, psc(+), mnips, had interviewed representatives of both parties and directed an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
According to the statement, the Commissioner also ordered that the conduct of the officer seen firing the rifle be subjected to appropriate disciplinary review.
The Command said it would not tolerate indiscipline, unprofessional conduct or abuse of police powers by any of its personnel.
It added that any officer found culpable after due investigation would be appropriately sanctioned in accordance with extant laws and regulations.
The police further stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration and mutual respect among security and government agencies, noting that effective public safety requires agencies to work together professionally towards a common objective.
“The incident is therefore being treated with the seriousness it deserves, without prejudice to the established working relationship between the Edo State Police Command and EDSTMA,” the statement said.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, discipline and respect for the rule of law in the discharge of its responsibilities.
It also appealed to members of the public not to take the law into their own hands, urging anyone with complaints about police misconduct to report through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU).
