A Nigerian man has stirred widespread reactions online after criticising the installation of CCTV cameras on a fuel tanker to monitor drivers’ activities.
In a video shared on X that has since gone viral, the man argued that while the surveillance system may be intended to safeguard the owner’s business and track operations, it comes at the expense of drivers’ welfare.
Speaking in Yoruba, he accused the tanker owner of prioritising control over fairness, suggesting the move reflects distrust toward drivers. He also questioned the method, insisting that preventing fuel diversion or theft should not involve what he described as excessive monitoring.
The video quickly ignited heated discussions across social media, with Nigerians expressing mixed reactions over the use of surveillance technology in commercial trucking.
Some users defended the tanker owner, noting that fuel theft and diversion have become increasingly common in the sector. Others went further, alleging that some drivers engage in extreme practices, including selling off fuel and staging accidents.
However, a number of commenters pointed out that the issue is more complex, arguing that poor wages and harsh working conditions also contribute to misconduct among drivers. One user highlighted the high value of fuel cargo, noting that a single tanker load can be worth over ₦30 million, which may explain why owners are tightening monitoring measures.
The debate reflects broader concerns about trust, accountability, and worker welfare within Nigeria’s transport and petroleum distribution sectors.
