A legal practitioner and relationship advocate, Stella Justice Nnennaya, has sparked conversations online after outlining the legal position of a wife and a mother in a married man’s life.
In a post shared via her Facebook platform, Legal and Marriage Clinic with Stella, Nnennaya explained that while a mother holds a significant emotional and moral role, the law recognizes the wife as having primary legal authority once a man is married.
According to her, marriage is not only a cultural or emotional union but also a legal contract that confers specific rights and responsibilities. She stated that in most legal contexts, a wife assumes the position of next of kin, giving her stronger standing in critical matters such as healthcare decisions, property control, and issues arising after death.
Nnennaya further noted that a mother, despite her importance, does not have the legal authority to override a wife’s decisions, take precedence over the wife in managing her son’s property, or assume automatic control based solely on biological ties.
She emphasized, however, that this legal reality should not be interpreted as a call to neglect or disrespect one’s mother. Instead, she urged men to maintain a balance by honoring their mothers while clearly understanding and respecting the legal implications of marriage.
The legal advocate also highlighted the importance of setting healthy boundaries within families to prevent conflicts, noting that unresolved tensions between spouses and extended family members can create long-term disputes.
Addressing women, she added that mutual respect remains essential in maintaining harmony, stressing that authority alone cannot sustain relationships without understanding and cooperation.
Her remarks have since generated debate on social media, particularly around family roles, legal rights, and the evolving dynamics of marriage in modern society.
