A legal commentator, Confidence Aribibia, has cautioned the public against the risks of enabling disappearing messages on messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, warning that the feature could undermine potential legal claims.
In a post shared on her Facebook platform, Legal Talk with Confidence Aribibia, she explained that many individuals are unaware that everyday chat conversations can serve as critical evidence in legal disputes. These may include proof of payments, agreements, promises, or even fraudulent exchanges.
According to Aribibia, activating disappearing messages could result in the automatic deletion of such vital records, leaving individuals without verifiable proof when disputes arise.
She stressed that in legal proceedings, the absence of documented evidence can significantly weaken a case, often reducing it to one person’s word against another’s. This, she noted, has led to situations where individuals are unable to recover lost funds or substantiate claims.
The legal expert advised users to remain vigilant when chatting online and to immediately disable disappearing message features if they are turned on without their consent or awareness.
Aribibia emphasized that while the feature may appear harmless, it carries serious implications in legal contexts, reiterating that in law, claims that cannot be proven are often treated as nonexistent.
