The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a leader of a masquerade cultural group, locally known as “Ekpo,” identified as Uwem Umanah, over alleged involvement in criminal activities including extortion and public disturbance.
According to police sources, Umanah was apprehended following reports that he led an illegal gathering of masqueraders who allegedly blocked a public highway, harassed motorists, and demanded money from residents in the area.
The police described the incident as a serious breach of public peace, emphasizing that while cultural practices are recognized and respected, they must not be used as a cover for criminal behavior.
Command spokesperson said investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will face prosecution upon completion of inquiries.
Authorities further warned that anyone involved in similar acts of extortion or public obstruction in the name of cultural festivals would be arrested and prosecuted to maintain law and order in the state.
