The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has confirmed that two Nigerians have been rescued while two others lost their lives following a tragic shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea.
According to the IOM, the incident occurred when a vessel carrying 49 migrants capsized during an attempt to reach Europe. Rescue teams managed to save several passengers, including two Nigerians, while recovery operations later confirmed the deaths of two others from the same nationality.
The organization noted that the latest tragedy adds to the growing number of migrants who have lost their lives this year while crossing one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.
The IOM reiterated its call for stronger international cooperation and safer, legal migration pathways to prevent further loss of life at sea.
