The founder of the One Love Family, Satguru Maharaj Ji, says he is willing to help facilitate the release of Nnamdi Kanu—leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)—on the condition that Biafra radio broadcasts and the sit-at-home directives are halted.
Speaking during an interview on his temple’s in-house radio on Wednesday, Maharaj Ji argued that Kanu faces serious terrorism charges and noted that such offences attract the most severe penalties under Nigerian law. He described Kanu’s current situation as fortunate, saying the matter has been “put on hold” despite the gravity of the allegations.
According to him, Kanu’s release can only come through a political settlement, which would require those advocating for his freedom to make concrete concessions.
He said:
“They should stop Biafra radio wherever it is, end the sit-at-home order, and accept the judgment while Igbo elders engage the President behind the scenes. When those steps are taken, I know how to work it out. Kanu will come out. I will help facilitate his release.”
Maharaj Ji also spoke on the political landscape, noting that President Bola Tinubu has given the South-East a more central role in national politics, a development he claimed some northern interests are unhappy about. He urged an end to narratives suggesting an attempt to Islamise the region.
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence handed down by Justice James Omotosho on several counts of terrorism, with additional sentences of 20 and five years on other counts, all without the option of a fine. The judge convicted him on all seven charges before issuing the sentences.
