The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is expected to consider a controversial bill in January 2026, seeking to prohibit sexual relationships with married men.
According to the proposal, which is reportedly sponsored by the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Her Excellency Senator Akon Inyang, the bill aims to criminalise any young girl, lady, or woman found engaging in a sexual relationship with a married man.
The bill stipulates a 10-year prison sentence without the option of a fine for any woman convicted under the law, while the married man involved would face a ₦2 million fine.
Sources at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly disclosed that the bill is scheduled for passage during plenary on Tuesday, subject to legislative procedures and approval by lawmakers.
If passed into law, the legislation would mark one of the most stringent moral-regulation statutes in the state and is expected to generate widespread public debate and legal scrutiny.
