Students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, who were earlier remanded in custody following a protest against the rising cases of kidnapping in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, have regained their freedom.

The students were arrested in connection with a peaceful demonstration organized to draw attention to insecurity in the community. They were later charged with alleged malicious damage and armed robbery, accusations which sparked public concern.

The affected students were among 52 suspects arrested after the protest and subsequently remanded at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre by an order of a Federal High Court sitting in Edo State.

Their release has been welcomed by students, rights advocates, and members of the university community, many of whom had called for their freedom, insisting that the protest was a legitimate response to the growing threat of kidnapping in Ekpoma
