Asaba — A suspected kidnapper, Liberty Kunu, has been killed by his own gang members following a failed rescue attempt after his arrest by security operatives in Delta State.
According to the Delta State Police Command, Kunu died from gunshot wounds inflicted by members of his gang who opened fire in an attempt to free him after the recovery of an AK-47 rifle from his possession.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, disclosed that the incident followed Kunu’s involvement in the kidnapping of three persons on January 17, 2026, in Sapele.
Edafe stated that the victims were blindfolded and taken to a bush where the suspects demanded a ransom of ₦2 million. When the victims could not meet the demand, Kunu and his accomplices allegedly forcefully dispossessed them of jewellery valued at about ₦9 million.

“Liberty Kunu was fatally shot by members of his gang during an attempt to rescue him after the recovery of one AK-47 rifle from him,” Edafe said.
He added that other members of the gang have been arrested and are currently in police custody, while investigations into the case are ongoing.
The Delta State Police Command assured the public of its commitment to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.
