The House of Representatives has amended the Electoral Act 2026 to criminalise dual membership of political parties in Nigeria.

Under the new amendment, any individual found to be registered with or belonging to more than one political party at the same time could face a fine of up to N10 million, a prison sentence of up to two years, or both.

The proposed provision is aimed at strengthening party discipline and addressing the persistent issue of politicians maintaining affiliations with multiple political parties simultaneously.

According to lawmakers, the measure seeks to promote transparency and integrity within the country’s political system by ensuring that party membership records remain clear and verifiable.

The amendment was adopted during plenary at the House of Representatives as part of ongoing legislative efforts to reform Nigeria’s electoral framework.
