Why Some ‘Good Marriages’ Still Feel Unfulfilling — Woman Explains

A woman identified as Fiona W. has shared a reflective perspective on relationships and personal identity, cautioning against building one’s entire sense of self around a romantic partner.

In a post on her official Facebook account, Fiona noted that it is possible to choose a partner who is loyal, kind and dependable, yet still experience a sense of emptiness within the relationship. According to her, such feelings are not necessarily caused by the partner, but by losing one’s individuality in the process of trying to fit into the role of a spouse.

She explained that when a person defines their identity solely through a relationship, they risk gradually losing their voice, independence, personal interests and overall sense of direction. What may initially appear as stability, she argued, can eventually feel restrictive if personal growth and self-expression are neglected.

Fiona emphasised that a healthy marriage is built on the coming together of two already complete individuals, rather than one person seeking fulfillment or identity through the other. In her view, relationships are meant to complement a person’s life, not serve as the foundation of their existence.

She further advised individuals to invest time in understanding themselves, developing a strong sense of purpose, and cultivating self-awareness before committing to a lifelong partnership. Without this foundation, she warned, people may find themselves suppressing their growth or identity in order to maintain peace within the relationship.

Fiona concluded by encouraging people not to see marriage as the ultimate goal, but rather as an addition to an already meaningful and well-developed life.
