The Federal Government is set to launch FreeTV, a new national digital television platform designed to provide Nigerians with free access to a wide range of television content without subscription fees.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, the platform will officially go live on June 17 and will offer viewers access to more than 100 national, regional and state television channels across the country.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to deepen digital broadcasting, expand access to information and entertainment, and accelerate Nigeria’s transition to digital television services.

Officials said FreeTV would enable households to enjoy diverse programming, including news, sports, entertainment, educational and cultural content, without the burden of monthly subscription payments typically associated with pay-TV services.

The government noted that the platform is expected to improve media accessibility, particularly for low-income households and residents in underserved communities, while promoting local content and strengthening the country’s broadcasting industry.

The launch of FreeTV is also seen as a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital broadcasting agenda, aimed at ensuring that millions of Nigerians have access to quality television services regardless of their economic status.

With over 100 channels available at no cost, the platform is expected to provide viewers with a wider range of content choices while encouraging greater participation in the country’s digital economy.

Further details on access requirements, compatible devices and channel listings are expected to be unveiled during the official launch.
