The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of Police Inspector Abdulkadir Garba, popularly known as “Buratai,” after he was struck by lightning while on duty in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 7, 2026, at about 2:19 p.m., as heavy rain and strong winds gathered around the command headquarters.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, Inspector Garba was coordinating vehicle parking opposite the Borno State Police Command headquarters alongside his senior colleague, ASP Wazani Adamu, when the unexpected tragedy happened.
Daso explained that both officers attempted to seek shelter moments before the rain began but were struck by lightning before they could reach safety.
“Rain often comes with its own blessings, but this one arrived with a heartbreaking streak of tragedy,” the police spokesperson said in a tribute released on Friday.
He added that while ASP Wazani Adamu survived the incident “in what may be described as a miracle,” Inspector Garba suffered severe impact from the lightning strike and later died from partial burns sustained on his body.
Describing the late officer as dedicated and hardworking, Daso said Garba was widely respected for his commitment to duty and service to humanity.
“He lost his life, not to violence or conflict, but to the force of the storm,” Daso stated.
The command said the sudden death of the officer has left colleagues, friends, and residents in shock and mourning, remembering him as a familiar and devoted officer who served tirelessly under harsh weather conditions to maintain order.
