The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a self-styled native doctor, Olorunbukunmi Taiwo, and his wife, Awolegan Omolola Omotola, over an alleged N1.09 billion contract fraud.
The couple was brought before Justice Abubakar Usman of the Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti on a six-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and retaining proceeds of crime.
According to the EFCC, the defendants allegedly fraudulently obtained over N1.09 billion under the guise of executing contract-related transactions. The anti-graft agency also accused them of retaining funds believed to be proceeds of unlawful activities, contrary to Section 17(a) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004.
The defendants pleaded to the charges when they were read in court.
The case forms part of the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat financial crimes and prosecute individuals involved in fraudulent activities across the country.
The matter was subsequently adjourned for further proceedings.
