ASABA — Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, expressing optimism that the country’s democratic journey will usher in greater prosperity, development, and opportunities for all citizens.

The governor, in a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, commended Nigerians for their unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and constitutional governance despite the challenges facing the nation.

Oborevwori described June 12 as a historic milestone that symbolizes the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians in their struggle for democratic rule, noting that the sacrifices made by past heroes and pro-democracy activists must never be forgotten.

According to him, Democracy Day offers an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s progress, the strengthening of democratic institutions, and the shared responsibility of citizens and leaders in building a more united and prosperous country.

The governor stated that democracy remains the most effective system of government because it guarantees citizens the right to participate in governance while promoting accountability, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law.

He urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and elected leaders at all levels, emphasizing the need for peace, tolerance, and national unity as critical ingredients for sustainable development.

Oborevwori also expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, noting that ongoing reforms and the commitment of leaders across the federation would ultimately deliver positive outcomes for the people.

“On this Democracy Day, I congratulate all Nigerians and commend their steadfast belief in democratic governance. We must remain hopeful and united as a nation. With collective effort, patriotism, and commitment to national development, greater days are certainly ahead for our country,” the governor said.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Delta State through people-oriented policies, infrastructure development, and strategic programmes under the MORE Agenda.

According to him, the initiatives of his administration are focused on improving the welfare, living standards, and overall well-being of Deltans and residents across the state.

The governor further called on citizens to remain law-abiding and continue supporting government policies and programmes aimed at promoting economic growth, peace, and sustainable development in Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.
