AKWUKWU-IGBO — The wife of the Executive Chairman of Oshimili North Local Government Area, Chief Mrs. Flora Nneka Esewezie, on Wednesday flagged off the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week programme at the Health Centre in Akwukwu-Igbo, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare.

The event, held on June 18, 2026, brought together pregnant women, nursing mothers, health workers and community stakeholders to promote awareness of maternal and child health services, including nutrition support and immunisation.

Speaking during the programme, the Matron in charge of the Health Centre, Mrs. Chiamaka Bienichi, introduced the nutrition packs provided for mothers and children, explaining their components and health benefits.

She encouraged beneficiaries to spread awareness about the initiative and inform other mothers who may not yet be aware of the availability of the nutritional supplements.

In her address, Mrs. Esewezie urged pregnant women and nursing mothers to prioritise the health and wellbeing of their children by taking advantage of government-supported healthcare programmes.

She noted that the provision of nutritional supplements was designed to complement the daily dietary needs of mothers and children, particularly in ensuring adequate nutrient intake for healthy growth and development.

According to her, the intervention aligns with the M.O.R.E Agenda of the Delta State Government under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, which seeks to improve the welfare and quality of life of residents across the state.

Mrs. Esewezie also cautioned against misinformation surrounding vaccines and nutritional supplements, dismissing claims by some individuals that the health products distributed by government health workers are harmful.

She reassured residents that the vaccines and supplements provided through public health programmes are safe and intended to protect lives, urging mothers to disregard unfounded rumours and cooperate with healthcare officials during community outreach activities.

The chairperson further emphasized the importance of routine immunisation, proper nutrition and regular health checks in reducing maternal and child mortality rates.

The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week programme is part of ongoing efforts by government and health authorities to improve access to essential healthcare services for women and children at the grassroots level.
