The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Interior to advance internal security, drive key reforms, and improve citizen service delivery across the 36 states of the federation.
The commitment was made by the Chairman of the Conference, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, during a courtesy visit by a delegation of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly to the Minister of Interior, Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking after the meeting, Guwor said the engagement was designed to bridge the gap between federal internal policies and state-level legislative action, noting that state legislatures have a critical role in domesticating laws and providing oversight on matters within the Ministry’s mandate.
“We had a fruitful discussion on how state legislatures can better interface with the Ministry to support federal initiatives at the grassroots,” Guwor said in a statement shared on his official Facebook page.
He emphasized the need for stronger collaboration to enhance national security, promote peace and stability, and accelerate Nigeria’s development.
“Our shared goal is national development, peace, and improved welfare for Nigerians,” he stated, adding that the visit underscored the importance of deepening legislative-federal partnerships in areas under the Ministry’s purview.
Responding, the Minister of Interior, Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, welcomed the initiative and commended the Conference of Speakers for its proactive engagement.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustained dialogue with state legislatures, promising greater collaboration through data and information sharing, as well as joint oversight of federal facilities across the states.
Both parties agreed to establish formal channels of cooperation aimed at supporting citizen-centred programmes and improving governance nationwide.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to constitutional democracy, intergovernmental cooperation, and policies that will enhance national security and service delivery for Nigerians.
