The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has felicitated the immediate past Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, on the occasion of his birthday, describing him as a listening leader whose people-oriented policies continue to impact the lives of Deltans.

In a congratulatory message jointly signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, and the Acting Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, the union praised Okowa’s administration for implementing reforms that improved the welfare and career progression of civil servants, information officers, and journalists in the state.

The NUJ noted that Okowa’s tenure as governor from 2015 to 2023 was characterised by humility, accessibility, and responsiveness to the aspirations of the people.

The council particularly highlighted his approval of notional promotions to Grade Level 17 for eligible civil servants, describing the decision as a landmark intervention that ended years of career stagnation, where many officers had previously retired on Grade Level 16.

According to the union, the policy restored hope, boosted workers’ morale, and rewarded years of dedicated service, with many beneficiaries and their families still enjoying its positive impact.

The council also commended the former governor for approving the creation of two additional departments in the Delta State Ministry of Information, saying the move enhanced career advancement opportunities for Information Officers and strengthened service delivery within the ministry.

The NUJ further expressed appreciation for Okowa’s approval of the reintroduction of monthly stipends for registered practising journalists in Delta State, describing the gesture as a demonstration of his recognition of the vital role of the media in promoting democracy, good governance, and societal development.

The union stated that these and several other people-focused initiatives have secured the former governor a special place in the hearts of many Deltans and will remain defining aspects of his legacy.

The council prayed that God would grant Senator Okowa good health, renewed strength, divine wisdom, and many more years of fruitful service to Delta State and the nation.

The statement was jointly signed by Comrade Churchill Oyowe, Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, and Comrade Josephine Omodior, Acting Secretary.
