“A Male Child Is Not My Priority” — Dangote Says Three Daughters Can Carry on His Business Legacy

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has said having a male child is not a priority for him, stressing that his three daughters are fully capable of sustaining his business legacy.

Dangote made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Arise News anchor, Ojy Okpe, where he addressed questions about succession and the future leadership of the Dangote Group.

The business magnate said he does not subscribe to the belief that a male heir would necessarily be more capable of managing the family’s business empire than his daughters.

According to him, any of his daughters could potentially take over the leadership of the Dangote Group when he eventually retires, provided they possess the necessary capacity and commitment to lead the conglomerate.

Dangote’s position challenges the traditional expectation in many African societies that major family businesses and wealth should be passed primarily to male children.

While discussing his family and succession plans, he expressed confidence in his daughters and their ability to preserve and build on what he has established.

He also described children as gifts from God, suggesting that their gender should not determine their value or their potential role in the family’s future.

The Dangote Group, founded by the billionaire, has interests spanning cement, sugar, flour, salt, fertiliser and oil refining, among other sectors, making succession a significant issue for the future of one of Africa’s largest business conglomerates.

Dangote’s comments have renewed conversations around gender, inheritance and succession in African family businesses, particularly at a time when more women are taking on leadership roles across the corporate world.

For Dangote, however, the question of succession appears to be less about whether his heir is male or female and more about whether the person has the ability to carry forward the vision and responsibilities associated with the business empire he has built.
