Nearly 1,000 people have been arrested across France following another day of mass protests over the rising cost of living and poor school conditions, as clashes broke out in several cities after largely peaceful demonstrations.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets on Saturday, with tensions rising late in the day as police deployed tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters in Paris and other urban centres.

In Marseille, barricades were reportedly set ablaze, while in Bordeaux, some protesters tore boards from a shop amid growing unrest.

Despite the clashes, authorities appeared to have prevented a repeat of the widespread rioting and looting that marred protests the previous weekend, when businesses were targeted and buildings set on fire in scenes described as among the most serious episodes of public disorder in modern French history.

Figures released by France’s Interior Ministry put Saturday’s turnout at approximately 410,000 demonstrators nationwide. However, trade unions estimated that about 800,000 people participated in the protests, highlighting the difference between official and union assessments.

Authorities deployed approximately 70,000 police officers across the country in an effort to maintain order and prevent demonstrations from escalating into further violence. Restrictions were also imposed in several cities as security agencies worked to contain the unrest.

The demonstrations reflect mounting public frustration over the cost of living and conditions in schools, with protesters demanding action on issues affecting households, workers and the education sector.

Although most of the demonstrations remained peaceful during the day, the clashes later in the evening underscored the challenges facing French authorities as they attempt to balance public demonstrations with the need to protect lives and property.

With tensions continuing in several urban centres, attention is now focused on the government’s response to protesters’ demands and whether further demonstrations could trigger renewed unrest across the country.
